Boondock Saints II: Better Vs. Worse

The release of Boondock Saints 2: All Saints Day, on November 13rd 2009, brought a lot of die hard fans a sequel to their favorite movie of all time. Many had been expecting this movie to come out years earlier, but due to some legal issues, it took 10 years after the original to be finally released to theaters around America. It was first shown in theaters around the northeastern and west coast. Places like New York and Los Angeles were the first to see the movie, for obvious reasons. After a huge success in the box office, the movie was released to other major cities on November 16th, and 25th. There were a lot of mixed opinions on the movie when compared to the first.
We happen to have two of those different opinions on the matter here at Omglole.com. Our writers Doubleup and Ryan Black will be showing your their views on the subject.
Do not read either reviews unless you have seen the movie. There are a few spoilers.
Better

The Boondock Saints was one of my favorite movies. The mixture of drunken-Irish-style comedy and action made it the perfect movie. I have seen it at least 30-40 times, and can practically recite the movie in my head. I couldn’t contain myself when I saw the trailer for the sequel to my favorite movie. I was completely aware of the legal delays associated with the making of it. I checked the IMDB Page for the movie every week or so. I was very excited for this movie.
When I finally got to see this long anticipated follow up, I walked out of the theater very satisfied. Even though a lot of the comedy scenes were basically the same as the last movie, they fit in very well. The time period for the movie was appropriately placed 8 years after the original took place. All the actors seemed to have aged quite a bit, but it fit with the story. The sequel was a lot less quotable than the first, but I guess not everything can be perfect. One of my favorite scenes was the overplayed thought process of what they were going to do in the shootout with the crate of heroin. They added effects to make it seem lighter and happier, like everything was going to go as planned. While in reality nothing worked the way it was supposed to, and the brothers ended up crashing to the ground in a box 20 feet above from a forklift. The Mexican sidekick was a very nice replacement for Rocco. He was a lot different and set up the movie for a lot of the comedy scenes. His most memorable moment would have to be in the closet with the janitor, when he’s trying to come up with a one-liner after they kill the whole Yakavetta Family.
You could definitely tell that the production team had a lot more money to use on this one. There was a lot more action scenes that were a lot more played out than the first. I swear they must have fallen from something to shoot people 3 or 4 times. Which isn’t that much more than the first movie’s 2 times.
This movie was made to satisfy the hardcore fan’s need for another movie. So it had a lot of tie backs to the original. A lot more than it needed, in fact. The first few were kind of funny and made you look at your friends and laugh, but after those it kind of got annoying. It was almost like Troy Duffy was trying a bit too hard to satisfy his fans. He did a good job at this, but people like me walked away feeling like they are hard to please. How can you possibly be mad at Troy for this? He worked so hard on this, and I for one am satisfied with it.
Worse

Now, Don’t get me wrong here guys. I loved the first movie like a pothead loves cheap sushi. Regardless, the first movie was not enough to save me from leaving Boondock Saints II feeling disappointed.
This wasn’t your regular disappointment, either. It was about on par with waking up Christmas morning to find a note saying “Better luck next year”.
Yeah…that bad.
The kind of disappointment that can only be truly expressed with a good old fashioned comic strip:

In all fairness, As we all know, The first one was gonna be hard to live up to.
A little less SHOW and a little more BALLS and I think it would have been a much better movie. We all know the old saying Keep it simple (Stupid!) or even better… If it isn’t broken, DON’T FIX IT.
Like my fellow Writer above, I can honestly say, there were a FEW good parts. Unfortunately it was one of those situations where the good was completely over-shadowed by the bad. (see fig 1.)

Fig.1
Here are Five things that, IF CHANGED, would have been enough to make me enjoy the movie.
1: The acting done by the 3 cops is horrible, Throughout the movie. Recast or Re-shoot.
2: The Music was over the top, not bad-ass, And it made the cheesy scenes, Even cheesier. Get someone with taste to pick the music out next time.
3: One of the opening scenes was a double-ass-shot of both of the brothers.
HINT: This is a guys movie, We don’t want to see that.
4: The woman FBI agent just came off as mildly annoying and not nearly as cool as they were trying to make her seem. Another drunken FBI agent, Hell, just a normal guy would have been much better than her.
5: Give the movie A REAL ENDING. Not some crazy plot twist/Setup for a third movie. Considering the track record these movies have.. We wont be seeing a third movie until 2020ish.. And I don’t want to be thinking about the possible ways you could fuck up the third one for the next 10+ years.

first article really sucked.
